Elevated CO 2 effects on mesophyll conductance and its consequences for interpreting photosynthetic physiology
نویسنده
چکیده
Mesophyll conductance ( g m ) generally correlates with photosynthetic capacity, although the causal relationship between the two is unclear. The response of g m to various CO 2 regimes was measured to determine its relationship to environmental changes that affect photosynthesis. The overall effect of CO 2 growth environment on g m was species and experiment dependent. The data did not statistically differ from the previously shown A – g m relationship and was unaffected by CO 2 treatment. The consequences of the CO 2 effect on g m for interpreting photosynthesis in individual cases were investigated. Substantial effects of assumed versus calculated g m on leaf properties estimated from gasexchange measurements were found. This differential error resulted in an underestimation in ratio of maximum carboxylation to electron transport, especially in plants with high photosynthetic capacity. Including g m in the calculations also improved the agreement between maximum carboxylation rates and in vitro Rubisco measurements. It is concluded that g m is finite and varies with photosynthetic capacity. Including g m when calculating photosynthesis parameters from gas-exchange data will avoid systematic errors. Effects of Irradiance during Growth on Adaptive Photosynthetic Characteristics of Velvetleaf and Cotton.
We grew velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic.) and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. var. Stoneville 213) at three irradiances and determined the photosynthetic responses of single leaves to a range of six irradiances from 90 to 2000 mueinsteins m(-2)sec(-1). In air containing 21% O(2), velvetleaf and cotton grown at 750 mueinsteins m(-2)sec(-1) had maximum photosynthetic rates of 18.4 and 21.9 m...
متن کاملEffects of carbon dioxide concentration and nutrition on photosynthetic functions of white birch seedlings.
To investigate the interactive effects of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO(2)]) and nutrition on photosynthesis and its acclimation to elevated [CO(2)], a two-way factorial experiment was carried out with two nutritional regimes (high- and low-nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K)) and two CO(2) concentrations (360 and 720 ppm) with white birch seedlings (Betula papyrifera...
متن کاملVariable Mesophyll Conductance among Soybean Cultivars Sets a Tradeoff between Photosynthesis and Water-Use-Efficiency.
Photosynthetic efficiency is a critical determinant of crop yield potential, although it remains below the theoretical optimum in modern crop varieties. Enhancing mesophyll conductance (i.e. the rate of carbon dioxide diffusion from substomatal cavities to the sites of carboxylation) may increase photosynthetic and water use efficiencies. To improve water use efficiency, mesophyll conductance s...
متن کاملThe mechanistic basis of internal conductance: a theoretical analysis of mesophyll cell photosynthesis and CO2 diffusion.
Photosynthesis is limited by the conductance of carbon dioxide (CO(2)) from intercellular spaces to the sites of carboxylation. Although the concept of internal conductance (g(i)) has been known for over 50 years, shortcomings in the theoretical description of this process may have resulted in a limited understanding of the underlying mechanisms. To tackle this issue, we developed a three-dimen...
متن کاملThe contribution of photosynthesis to the red light response of stomatal conductance.
To determine the contribution of photosynthesis on stomatal conductance, we contrasted the stomatal red light response of wild-type tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum 'W38') with that of plants impaired in photosynthesis by antisense reductions in the content of either cytochrome b(6)f complex (anti-b/f plants) or Rubisco (anti-SSU plants). Both transgenic genotypes showed a lowered content of the anti...
